Midwest Medicinal Plants

Book Review by Tracy Forker

Midwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest and use 109 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness by Lisa M. Rose

This is a delightful book, beautifully illustrated with full color photos.  The author begins the book with an overview of how-to make infusions, tinctures, teas, decoctions as well as gathering and preparing the herbs for use.

With just a couple of exceptions, I have seen every one of the plants referenced growing in Missouri.  Most are very common.  A few will take a bit more determination to find.

Rose assigns each plant various sections on identification, where, when and how to find the plant, medicinal uses, cautions and suggestions for sustainable harvest.

I have personally used the guidance in this book to prepare my own tinctures and teas and have learned some amazing things about common plants that I was not aware of.
